Each year, the students of the MA Architecture (Digital Media) engage in a series of seminars directed by Dirk Lellau. Based in critical theory and on a series of conceptual starting points, photography is employed as a medium through which to explore architectural space. As a challenge to the transient nature of the digital image in contemporary media, the photographs are intensely scrutinised and discussed, developing over a number of weeks into a highly refined and considered critical investigation.

“Everyone has a story about the weather. This may be one of the only things each of us holds in common. And although it varies greatly from here to there – it is finally, one weather that we share.”
Roni Horn, Weather Reports You (Artangel/Steidl 2007)
Weather, thus, appears to form something that could be called the binding tissue of a social body. As a space weather is huge and unattainable for the individual. But it is an individual’s perception of weather phenomena that constitutes the basis for a collective understanding of this space.
Which implies the crossing of a border. The limited view of an individual – a perceptual frame, as it were – opens up. It does so in the sense that individual observation, and perception in general, becomes subjected to processes of imagination and embedded in systems of knowledge. With respect to a phenomenology of the space of weather, the integrity of this frame, as a clearly definable view from an interior out onto an exterior, dissolves. It is therefore not only the interplay between phenomena and noumena that is significant for the build-up of this space, but also the transitions between exteriority and interiority.
A little interior in its own right, the monocular photographic camera appeared an appropriate device with which to instigate thought about the relationship of one interior to another, and in relation to their corresponding exterior(s).
