Thesis Design Development
The Thesis Design Development module is designed to provide an introduction to design research culture and methodologies; and to provide a foundation for the Major Thesis Project. The primary aim of the module is to encourage the development of research interests suitable for further development and to provide a critical framework and focus for those interests. The specific aims can be summarised as:
· To initiate the application of appropriate design methods, tools and techniques.
· To facilitate the application and integration of research.
· To inform the development of the student’s own design strategies in terms of the cultural and theoretical context.
· To provide the study “space” and design studio time for investigation and development of a challenging proposal capable of being taken further into a Major Thesis Project
· To provide a vehicle for the application of theories, concepts and procedures introduced in the digital media modules.
· To provide a context against which the explorations of the Theory + Positioning module can be set.
Particular emphasis is placed on the investigation of new media technology and the potential associated with its integration into architecture and architectural design.
Indicative syllabus content:
The syllabus is essentially based on a ‘learning contract’ model with each student pursuing an individual area of research agreed with the module tutor. However, to facilitate the development of student centred work, a series of set analytical exercises provide a media based framework for the initial studies. These exercises will typically address an exploration of the subject through:
· Digital video
· Multi-media presentation
· Real-time interactive media
A brief technical introduction to each of these techniques is provided to help initiate a productive design-based approach.
